Levites Part II

Since this is such a complicated long topic, I am once again going to focus on one specific detail: verses that speak of the levites in a specific position which the verse itself contrasts with the position of the Kohen. As to the significance of these verses, once again, I'll hold off on that discussion till I'm done with all the data points, then I'll tie it all together.

Anyway, psukim that explicitly contrast kohanim and liviim can be found only in P. Note, all such verses explicitly place the koahnim on a higher rung of a clearly hierarchical system:

1. שמות פרק לח פסוק כא
עֲבֹדַת
הַלְוִיִּם בְּיַד אִיתָמָר בֶּן אַהֲרֹן הַ
Note - Isamar, the Kohen, is in charge of the Levites
2. במדבר פרק ג פסוק ו
הַקְרֵב אֶת מַטֵּה
לֵוִי וְהַעֲמַדְתָּ אֹתוֹ לִפְנֵי אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן וְשֵׁרְתוּ אֹתוֹ
3. במדבר פרק ג פסוק לב
וּנְשִׂיא נְשִׂיאֵי
הַלֵּוִי אֶלְעָזָר בֶּן אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן פְּקֻדַּת שֹׁמְרֵי מִשְׁמֶרֶת הַקֹּדֶשׁ
Again - He's in charge
4. במדבר פרק ח פסוק יט
וָאֶתְּנָה אֶת
הַלְוִיִּם נְתֻנִים לְאַהֲרֹן וּלְבָנָיו מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲבֹד אֶת
5. וַיַּקְרֵב אֹתְךָ וְאֶת כָּל אַחֶיךָ בְנֵי
לֵוִי אִתָּךְ וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּם גַּם כְּהֻנָּה
implies the kehunah is more
6. במדבר פרק יח פסוק ב
וְגַם אֶת אַחֶיךָ מַטֵּה
לֵוִי שֵׁבֶט אָבִיךָ הַקְרֵב אִתָּךְ וְיִלָּווּ עָלֶיךָ וִישָׁרְתוּךָ
7. במדבר פרק יח פסוק ו
וַאֲנִי הִנֵּה לָקַחְתִּי אֶת אֲחֵיכֶם
הַלְוִיִּם מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לָכֶם מַתָּנָה נְתֻנִים לַיקֹוָק
8. במדבר פרק יח פסוק כו
וְאֶל
הַלְוִיִּם תְּדַבֵּר וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם כִּי תִקְחוּ מֵאֵת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת
הַמַּעֲשֵׂר אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לָכֶם מֵאִתָּם בְּנַחֲלַתְכֶם וַהֲרֵמֹתֶם מִמֶּנּוּ תְּרוּמַת
יְקֹוָק מַעֲשֵׂר מִן הַמַּעֲשֵׂר:
and they give this to the Kohen. The structure of the Jews giving 1/10 the Levite and the Levite giving 1/10 to the Kohen highlights the hierarchy.

All of the above verses are in P. At this point, I don't want to get involved in implications of this fact to the broader Levite discussion. I'm just noting it in the way I'd note any phenomenon. It's a phenomenon that's limited to P, to be added to the long list of such phenomenon that in unison make a strong case for the existence of the P source.
