Kohanim Halviim

Reish Lakish, a great amorah and favorite commenter on this blog, has recently raised some issues regarding the role of the Levites in Tanach. This is obviously a large issue and rather than stuff it into one post that will be too long for anyone to read, I will break it into several posts. The point of each post will be small and may seem insignificant on its own right, but the totality of the posts should produce a compelling result. I'll begin with something relatively strait forward, scientific, and verifiable: a phrase. In D, the phrase "Kohanim Havliim" is used 5 - 7 times. It's never used outside of D (in the Torah - it is used in the D parts of Nach).

הַלְוִיִּם וְאֶל הַשֹּׁפֵט אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם

כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר יוֹרוּ אֶתְכֶם הַכֹּהֲנִים
הַלְוִיִּם כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוִּיתִם תִּשְׁמְרוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת

וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה וְהַכֹּהֲנִים
הַלְוִיִּם אֶל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר
